Every machine has a tipping point.
Work it fewer days than that and hiring is cheaper. Work it more and owning wins. Move the slider and watch the balance shift.
Above this many days of use per year, buying costs you less than hiring.
Count actual days on the machine, not calendar days it sits on site. This one figure moves the answer more than anything else on the page.
What this leaves out
- Fuel. You pay it either way, so including it would move both totals equally and change nothing.
- Finance costs. Borrowing to buy? Add the interest you'll pay over three years to the purchase price before entering it.
- Availability. Owning means the machine is there on a wet Tuesday when every hire yard nearby is booked out. That's worth real money on a tight programme, and no calculator can price it.
- Downtime. A rental breakdown is the hire company's problem. Yours is yours, and it stops the job while it's fixed.
- Resale is an estimate. Hours, condition, brand and the used market all move it. Drop the percentage if you work the machine hard.
Reading the result
- The tipping point
- The number of days per year at which both routes cost the same across three years. Work more days than that and ownership is cheaper; work fewer and hiring is. For most owner-operators the line lands somewhere between fifteen and thirty days a year, but it shifts sharply with purchase price and day rate.
- Why hire length matters
- Delivery and pickup are charged per hire, not per day. Five separate one-day hires carry five delivery charges; one five-day hire carries one. If your work arrives as short scattered jobs, renting costs far more than the day rate alone suggests and the tipping point drops.
- Depreciation is the real cost of owning
- The purchase price is not what ownership costs. What it costs is the gap between what you pay and what you sell it for, plus running costs in between. A machine bought at $28,000 and sold at $15,400 has cost $12,600 in depreciation however many hours are on the clock.
- Cost per day of use
- The figure under each column divides the three-year total by the days you'll actually be on the machine. It's the most honest comparison of the two, because it prices the idle time ownership carries and hiring doesn't.
- When renting wins regardless
- Occasional use, unpredictable job sizes, or needing different machine sizes for different work. Hiring lets you match the machine to the task instead of forcing every job onto the one you bought.
- When owning wins regardless
- Steady year-round work, jobs that start at short notice, or sites a hire yard can't reach quickly. If you're already hiring the same machine most months, the calculator usually confirms what you suspect.

In Action:
Our Machines at Work
From trenching and grading to demolition and utility work, tiny excavators handle a wide range of tasks with precision and control — proving their value on job sites where space and power both matter.
Did You Know?
Despite their compact frame, tiny excavators can dig trenches up to 8-10 feet deep and rotate a full 360 degrees — giving operators the flexibility to work efficiently in spaces where maneuvering room is limited but performance still matters.
— Industry Insight
Tiny excavators typically range from 1 to 6 tons, making them small enough to fit through standard garden gates and doorways while still delivering enough digging depth for most residential and utility projects — a balance larger machines simply can’t achieve
